Seam Rippers: The Small Tool with a Big Job
Seam rippers, despite their unassuming size, are indispensable tools in every sewing kit. Their primary purpose is to undo stitches, allowing for quick correction of mistakes or alterations.
Anatomy of a Seam Ripper:
- Handle: Provides a comfortable grip. Often made of plastic, wood, or, occasionally, metal.
- Metal Shaft: Extends from the handle, offering stability.
- Forked Prongs: The sharp, angled forks at the tip serve two primary functions:
- Cutting Threads: The inside of the “U” shaped fork is sharpened, allowing it to sever threads with precision.
- Guiding Threads: The curved prongs can carefully lift and guide threads away from the fabric for easier cutting.
- Protective Ball: Many seam rippers have a small plastic or metal ball at the base of the fork, preventing accidental snagging or tearing of the fabric.
